Google updated Gmail app to 5.6 version on September 16. The update does not include much of new features but this can give new looks for Gmail in the future. The new face of Gmail shall include better text formatting with additional signage for deep calendar integration in the future.
Android Police mentioned that text formatting with basic modifiers will be available such as Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, Underline, and Colours. This feature will also include fonts, colours, and sizes. Structural controls will also be available for Gmail in the future like lists and alignment. Moreover, related report said that the new formatting interface shall be accessible from the overflow menu on the Compose screen, replies, and action bar. The report added that "Format Text" or "F" will be seen as a shortcut key for such action.
Another future face of Gmail is Calendar Integration. Android Police noted that to be able to combine calendar and email tools, com.google.android.permission.READ_OOBE has to be permitted in the app. Once this has been made, friend's birthdays and important dates can auto-generate in emails.
On the other hand, recent report provided an instruction on how to download the new Gmail version. Users can install it like any other APK. Cryptographic signature warrants that the file is safe to install on the device. To be specific, the file name of Gmail 5.6 version is com.google.android.gm-5.6.102685581.release-56008676-minAPI14.apk.
Further, users have to ensure that the device has free memory of up to 12.31MB for the update, according to APK Mirror. The Android devices that can take advantage of the current Gmail update are those which run Android 4.0+ (Ice Cream Sandwich, API 14). The report added a link to click in for users who would like to manually do the update.
The new Gmail version entails a hint for its future face with better text formatting and calendar integration. Meanwhile, Android users can take an advantage of Gmail 5.6.
