Mobile Windows 10 Release Update: Improvements for Xbox App, Cortana, Microsoft Edge, Action Center, Skype & More

As Microsoft begins releasing earlier today a new build of Windows 10 Insider Preview for mobile, the latest operating system is unveiled with new features and improvements that surely Windows fanatics will find helpful and enjoyable. Aside from bug fixes, the preview shows improvements in Photos app, Xbox app, Cortana, Action Center, and several other updates.

As per insider preview's latest build, Windows 10 for mobile has updated the Start menu, Photos app, Xbox app, background picture, Microsoft Edge, Skype, text input, Tablet mode, Groove, Mail, Calendar, Maps, and other fixes.

Start Menu

On the Start menu, tile groups can be personalized into four columns of medium-sized tiles. This means each row can accommodate either eight small tiles or two large tiles. Try this on Settings > Personalization > Start > Enable "Show more tiles." The Start menu can now display 2048 tiles on various sizes compared to the current 512.

Photos App

Photos app introduces a folder view to see folders in OneDrive and PC more conveniently.

Xbox App

There is a bunch of updates on Xbox app. One, Friends list will automatically update or refresh friends' status (online/offline), and apps and games they are presently engaging. Two, the Activity Feed will load updates automatically, without having to push the refresh button. Activity Feed will also inform gamers with new items to view, like, re-share or comment on.

Three, gamers will be able to see his current status in contrast to his opponents or friends through the Achievements section on Profile > Compare. The comparison includes Gamerscore, Achievements and side-by-side contrast of selected percentage. Four, a most requested features on Xbox Feedback, the ability to utilize the Xbox app for text input on Xbox One so long as the device (keyboard, touch keypads, etc.) is compatible to enter text in search boxes.

Background Picture

Turn off the Windows background picture in the sign-in screen through Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Turn off "Show Windows background picture on the sign-in screen."

Microsoft Edge

On Microsoft Edge, the ORTC APIs will enable the real-time audio and video communications without having to install external devices. This too is applicable to Skype and Skype for Business.

Text Input

The text input panel is now expandable when writing to give space in Latin languages. When Tablet mode is disabled, the panel no longer launches on its own. The suggestions bar now has additional punctuation support for a more convenient punctuations inputting. Suggestions has been made more relevant as well.

Fixes

There have been a lot of fixing happening in Windows 10, including the search button, battery fly-out text, audio, and search bar on Start menu. Action Center no longer lights up if there are no notifications. Background shuffling happens randomly and not according on how they appear in folders. Use Cortana with local accounts.

Other improvements include the Tablet mode, Groove, Mail, Calendar, and Maps.
