'Independence Day: Resurgence' has wrapped up production and has entered post production. Director Roland Emmerich talks about the movie's real-time gap and what 20 years meant for the movie concept and production.
In an interview with Collider, Emmerich said that with 'Independence Day: Resurgence' happening after 20 years, the story meant a leapt in technology inside the story and in production. Plot-wise, the two-decade gap gave humans the time to come together "as a planet and to build incredible things." This makes them prepared and even out the playing field if just a little when extra terrestrials come back once more.
However even if humanity has united and established an "enormous defence program" using recovered alien technology, 20 years has also brought aliens more powerful than before. Just like before, 'Independence Day: Resurgence' will have people who will lead humanity's fight against alien destruction.
As reported by Movie Web, 20 years has also caused changes in the cast in comparison to the original Independence Day. Without Will Smith, 'Independence Day: Resurgence' features a younger generation cast like Maika Monroe, Jessie Usher and Liam Hemsworth.
Described as a "super-fresh, incredible cast", the 'Independence Day: Resurgence' younger cast is joined by the original 'Independence Day' star Jeff Goldblum. Reprising their roles as well are Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner.
According to Cinema Blend, the first trailer of 'Independence Day: Resurgence' will probably drop around the Christmas season. Emmerich is currently working over the film in the editing room but has to be doing a press junket for his other film, 'Stonewall', as well.
'Independence Day: Resurgence' is a highly-anticipated sequel which will be in theaters June 24, 2016.The original 'Independence' Day won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and was also nominated for Best Sound Mixing. Hopefully, with 20 year gap, the film will surpass those.
