With just an episode left before the finale of the first season of Fear the Walking Dead, its show runners took an unexpected turn from its usual walking dead attack to a rise of a fence to enclose the uninfected safe in its fourth episode.
Last Sunday, the viewers saw the family of Madison (Kim Dickens) and Travis (Cliff Curtis) and the rest of the neighborhood guarded by the National Guard and held within a newly constructed safe zone. While Travis trust the government so much, Madison doubts the entire operation. Later in the episode, the audience found out that those who were shut out of the fence either left town or been gunned down because anyone who doesn't seek shelter in the safe zone are considered threat to the survivors as narrated by Hollywood Reporter.
The threat posted by the walking dead is over powered by the threat discovered by Travis, Chris and Madison about the doings of the military outside the fence. The newly arrived Dr. Exner (Sandrine Holt) takes away the sick from the safe zone and brings them to the "hospital" which the government operates to quarantine the sick and for the safety of the survivors. Since Liza (Elizabeth Rodriguez) takes care of Griselda (Patricia Reyes Spindola) she decided to accept Dr. Exner's offer for her to come along. Griselda was taken to the "hospital" with Madison's son Nick who became a drug dependent.
Travis and Chris however found out that outside the fence, the sick are being executed by the National Guards. Greater fear came into their senses when Madison saw that not only the infected and the sick are being executed but even the those who are uninfected but decided not to enter the safe zone. Forbes uses Reagan's adage, "The nine most terrifying words in the English language is: "I'am from the Government, and I'm here to help." to put altogether the events in episode 4.
Show runner Dave Erickson told Entertainment Weekly that the said twist in the fourth episode aims to bring apocalypse to the audience in the most realistic presentation of it.
For the next episode, Fear the Walking Dead will feature how far Madison and Travis will go to bring back Nick, Griselda and Liza to safety, be it in the safe zone or outside. Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
