Director Alex Kurtzman has been tasked by Universal Pictures to be at the helm of the reboot of the 'The Mummy'. Dubbed as part of a shared Monster Universe of the studio, Kurtzman gives insights on how The Munny reboot is progressing.
In an interview with Slash Film, Kurtzman talks about directing 'The Mummy' reboot, after spending quite a time in writing and producing. Ready to take on the monster film, the director also mentioned Universal's support in the monster realm films. The move from 2016 release to a 2017 one is to for more prep time.
Working with Chris Morgan in the Monster Universe, Kurtzman feels he has big help in terms of knowledge on big movies and big franchises. With what he believes a wonderful team of writers, 'The Mummy' reboot will have an amazing launch.
As mentioned, Universal's 'The Mummy' reboot is part of the studio's efforts to make a Monster Universe. According to Cinema Blend, Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein and his Bride, the Invisible Man and Van Helsing join the mummy in their current and upcoming monsters.
Kurtzman, who is also in charg of the TV series Limitless, comments that this shared universe is akin to making TV shows in terms of thinking in a "serialized longview place." The difference would be, instead of seasons, you have each movie to deliver a connected story. The shared monster universe, he says, allows for more development of character and conflict.
According to Game Industry, 'The Mummy' monster has been "undervalued" and "underutilized" in various media of storytelling. For a while they were featured, specifically in Stephen Sommers' 1999 remake of Universal's classic 'The Mummy' from 1932 and its two sequels, 'The Mummy Returns' and 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.'
'The Mummy' reboot progress comes very welcome, as the article says that the lack of mummy movies also means the lack of video games that may be inspired from that. Kurtzman also commented that the modern setting changes the rules and even to 'The Mummy' itself. The challenge of making an "ancient creature" have a believable existence in a modern world is an exciting challenge 'The Mummy' reboot script has solved.
'The Mummy' reboot is slated for a 24 March 2017 release. The story will not be related to the Stephen Sommers' trilogy, but will take on new characters. The only point of similarity will be the bandaged monster that will sow terror, this time, on unknowing Navy Seals.
