'Pacific Rim 2' will be pushing through contrary to previous reports that stated its cancellation due to budget constraints. Director Guillermo del Toro admitted that although the film's production will be delayed for the meantime, they are still working on getting the sequel up and running.
Previous reports stated that the follow-up film for 2013's blockbuster hit may be scrapped. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second installation of the kaiju series has been halted indefinitely and may be subject to cancellation due to a lack of funding.
The report stated, "Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, but for now the project - which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 - has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all)."
An article by Yahoo! News stated that November was the planned filming date for 'Pacific Rim: Maelstrom' in time for its scheduled release date for August 4, 2017. Although plot details remain scarce as of the present, Del Toro and his team have been working on designing the monsters and robots that will be appearing in the second film. It was also reported that leading man Charlie Hunnam will be back to reprise his role as the Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket.
It was recently reported by Slash Film that the filmmaker has gone on the record to reassure fans that his team is continuing work on the screenplay and will hopefully put out a proposed budget in the coming three weeks. He said, "As far as I'm concerned, it's not gone." He added that the delay will prompt him to schedule a later release date and that he may do another movie in the middle while things clear up.
'Pacific Rim 2' is a follow-up to 2013's science-fiction monster film. Its predecessor starred Hunnam, Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost, Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori, Max Martini as Herc Hansen, and Charlie Day as Dr. Newton Geiszler. The first film received generally positive feedback from critics and audiences alike and earned a total of $411 million in the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
