World War Z 2 is currently in the works and Brad Pitt is expected to return to reprise his role as UN Agent Gerry Lane. Steven Knight also revealed that the first draft for the film has been turned in and added that the sequel begins with a clean slate which could mean a different turn on the plot's story.
Talking to Collider, Knight confirmed that the film took one step forward in pre-production. According to the Oscar-nominee writer, he was approached for the sequel with a question of "how do we move this along?" when he got on board which supports his previous statement that the film will begin with a "clean slate".
Knight concealed plot details, however, he did reveal what he loved about the first film. "I think the beauty of the first film was the way that it never paused for breath. It never spent a moment thinking, 'Hang on a minute, we'd better tell the audience what this is all about.' It stayed in the moment, it stayed with that person", Knight said.
Knight's statement could mean that the sequel might also follow the first film's single point of view formula, but plot wise, none has been officially revealed thus far. However, new reports suggest that the film might head to a different direction if it was to "begin with a clean slate".
According Screenrant, Knight's statement could indicate an independence of the film from its source novel, which could mean that the film might have a whole new different story. Although it could also mean a plot for the sequel that would include certain elements from the novel of Max Brooks while retaining Pitt's Gerry Lane and his family in it.
Also, Cinemablend previously reported that the film might go a different direction from the plot of the first film. However, these claims are fan-based and must be treated with a grain of salt as the wait continues for official confirmation.
Juan Antonio Bayona is currently attached to helm the upcoming World War Z 2. It is set to be produced by David Ellison, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Brad Pitt. It is expected to hit theaters on June 09, 2017.
