'Mortal Kombat' reboot: Will movie finally have tangible progress with James Wan as producer?

By

Ever since 2011, the 'Mortal Kombat' reboot has been on the works, but after 4 years, it remained as it was: under development. With the exit of Kevin Tancharoen as director, the silver screen comeback of the popular game had more doubts on its progress. However, with James Wan's entrance as a producer, fans are hoping that the confirmed 'Mortal Kombat' reboot will move forward from its seeming stagnation.

James Wan is on a roll with his movies, and this time he is producing the 'Mortal Kombat' reboot. Wan has been successful in his directing career, with most of his movies grossing blockbuster returns. Fans are hoping that he will bring this success to the 'Mortal Kombat' reboot. However, Wan has his directorial plate full with 'The Conjuring 2', 'Robotech' and 'Aquaman', according to Venture Capital Post. He is also reportedly being asked to come back for 'Fast and Furious 8.'

Understandably, news of Wan's involvement has the fans anticipating for a progress on the 'Mortal Kombat' reboot. While Wan is not taking over the director's seat which Kevin Tancharoen left for undisclosed reasons, many 'Mortal Kombat' enthusiasts have been optimistic that a replacement and casting will follow, hopefully sooner rather than later. Even 'Mortal Kombat' co-creator Ed Boon have resurrected the movie reboot enthusiasm by posting a fan casting via twitter, captioned: "A pitch, an idea, or just a dream."

As one of the biggest game franchise, the 'Mortal Kombat' reboot has a plethora of characters that fans want to see. According to Movie Pilot, it seems that the casting for 'Mortal Kombat' can be brutal as well. Some of the characters mentioned were Liu Kang, Raiden, Kitana, Sonya, Shao Kahn and Johnny Cage among a very long list. While the film has no progress under than signing up Wan, fans can enjoy the latest game Mortal Kombat X and its latest patch that fixes the bugs and balances characters.

With status unknown and unannounced, it seems that the 'Mortal Kombat' reboot has not reached the treatment/outline stage yet, and may well be still working on pitches. If so then casting may be far away, and the release date even farther, than fans would like them to be. It is also highly unlikely that the original forty- fifty million dollar announced budget will stick.
