‘Joy’ movie updates: More than just a ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ reunion? David O. Russell‘s “extensive changes” wins sole screenplay credit

By

Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro are back for another David O. Russell film and, no, it's not a 'Silver Linings Playbook' sequel. Starring in the movie 'Joy', Lawrence, Cooper, and De Niro are highly anticipated to join the awards season contention. Meanwhile, Russell faced a conflict for the script credit of the movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script of 'Joy' had a dispute over crediting, which resulted with Annie Mumolo sharing a writing (story) credit with Russell and Russell with sole credit on the screenplay. Annie Mumolo (writer-actress of Bridesmaids) was commissioned in 2012 to write a script on the life of Joy Mangano, who is famous for inventing the Miracle Mop.

After more than a year, the script she delivered was deemed in need of more character development. That is where they signed up Russell to direct the film. Russell is known for making changes in script, and with 'Joy', he has freedom to "rework the script" just as he has done on previous films. Likened to an impressionistic artist, Russell's "unique" product based off the Mumolo script became a point of debate.

This resulted on the departure from some biopic elements and "fictionalizing part of the tale." The titular character of 'Joy', played by Jennifer Lawrence, as a "composite of several female entrepreneurs." Lawrence herself commented that the original script had evolved to something very different, according to Design & Trend. Lawrence is said the original script "developed and changed" to an entirely different narrative once it went "into David [O. Russell] land."

The award winning actress even detailed that Russell even "wrote a scene by watching [her] get [her] hair done." She remarked that the elements of the movie, including the script and the cast, are the "paint" to Russell's "paintbrush and canvas."

'Joy' reunites Russell with his 'Silver Linings Playbook' cast, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper, but promises to be of a different stroke from the said film. According to 20th Century Fox, 'Joy' details the life of "the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty." Lawrence teased that usual biopics show the "fight on the way to success and the happy ending" but this movie strays from that. Russell's story then also goes on to tell the not-so-pretty "struggle that comes after" success and with "the sacrifices that come" in achieving success.

'Joy' is currently under post-production. Set to be released on December 25, the next buzz the movie hopes to generate is awards season contention. After the strife on the writing credit of 'Joy', many hope that Russell's changes will prove to be worth the credit he got.
