Major mobile carrier in the US AT&T has finally rolled out the official over-the-air update of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to its Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 units beginning early today. Samsung's 2015 flagship smartphones are now expected to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow in not less than three months.
Being the least to roll out the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update to Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 phones, AT&T is expected to make up to consumers following complaints of the overdue release. While AT&T comes fourth among major carriers in this update, tech analysts sees it that the carrier might be the first to release the Android 6.0 Marshmallow software to these devices.
If rumors are true after all, then AT&T must indeed be pushing the Marshmallow update before the year ends, particularly in December. Sprint is the only major carrier in the US left that has not released Lollipop's final update yet. Verizon, US Cellular and T-Mobile have rolled it out mid-August until the second week of September. Meanwhile, Sprint is still stuck with 5.1.
Mobile carriers have already pushed the final Lollipop update to some older and mid-range phones, including the Galaxy J1, Galaxy Mega 2, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Tab 4 8.0, Galaxy Tab X 10.1, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Core Prime, and Galaxy Grand Prime, among others.
Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is pegged at 660 MB, bringing with it a bunch of new features and enhancements in icons, user interface, connectivity, technical supports, and more. However, the carrier has not released the changelog for the update yet.
The update will come over the air if device is connected to a Wi-Fi. If prompted for the update, just follow onscreen instructions. Make sure the battery is charged to at least 50% and storage has enough memory space. To manually check the update, go to Settings > About phone > Software update > Check for updates.
