Last Thursday, NBC launched "Heroes Reborn" with a special two-hour premiere. The reboot, which hailed from Tim Kring, unfortunately did not surpass viewers and critics’ expectations.
The premiere opened with a literal bang, giving viewers a hindsight view of what happened next after the attack in Odessa, Texas. Later, we meet the new breed of meta-humans, called the “Evos” – who are now in hiding because the common people blame them for the recent tragedy. Tim Kring also plotted a way to reintroduce the familiar characters we’ve already met in the original run.
Noah Bennet aka HRG was prominent in the first two hours, as he plays a critical key to finding out who caused the explosion. Viewers have yet to find out how Mohinder, Hiro and Parkman will resurface in the next episodes.
The peacock network has touted this reboot for months and after some heavy lifting done by the marketing team, the season premiere did not live up to its hype. Critics think that Tim Kring did not offer something fresh, more so an edgier and solid storyline to keep the fans engulfed in “Reborn”.
“It becomes clear that this is still very much the same show that played four seasons and outstayed its welcome by three. In fact, it’s tough to discern exactly what the “Reborn” part of the title refers to aside from an empty promise that this time it will be different,” The Wrap said in a review.
Deadline also stressed out that the redux felt underwhelming compared to other superhero-themed series that crowd our small screens today. “Heroes Reborn lacks the pace to keep up in 2015 with the likes of Arrow, The Flash, Penny Dreadful, Netflix’s Daredevil and Sense8 and the soon-to-take-flight Supergirl on CBS,” the site commented.
Undoubtedly, "Heroes Reborn" was not welcomed with open arms. However, with its flaws and all, longtime followers of Hiro and co. still have a long way to go. The series is still 11 episodes away from the finale. On a positive note, the "Heroes" fandom can look forward to the Evos they all just met – who according to The Guardian can still offer something we haven’t seen before.
“Some of the new characters are interesting and having them have to save the world that hates and fears them (to paraphrase the X-Men) is a new twist. There clearly seems to be a plan in place for what will happen over these first 13 hours, so at least that is comforting.”
NBC’s Heroes Reborn got slammed by the critics after the awaited series premiere. They questioned Tim Kring’s way of delivering something supposedly “different” and “fresh”. Others worry that it cannot compete with "The Flash", "Daredevil" and other hit superhero-themed series viewers have enjoyed in the past years.
