America's fourth biggest mobile carrier US Cellular is now pushing the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop's official over-the-air (OTA) update to its Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ units beginning today. New reports sparked that the carrier in on the verge of Android 6.0 Marshmallow preparation slated to hit these devices before the year ends.
US Cellular has just rolled out starting today the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to Samsung's new releases Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ via OTA release. The update is expected to bring in new features and improvements of the Lollipop software.
The carrier's current rollout of Lollipop's final software version prompted new reports that it is preparing the Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The Marshmallow update for Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ is slated in December 2015. Marshmallow will debut come October 5 on Google's LG-made Nexus 5X and Huawei-made Nexus 6P smartphones.
With Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, Galaxy Note 5 gets the new build 920R4TYU2AOI3 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ G928R4TYU2AOI4. Before getting the update, device must be registered to a Google account. Make sure it is connected to a Wi-Fi network and storage has enough memory space.
The OTA update comes automatically when device is connected to a Wi-Fi. To manually check for the update, go to Settings > About device > Software update > OK. Then follow onscreen instructions.
The update can also be downloaded using Samsung Kies. Here's a quick guide:
1. Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable. Firmware upgrades are available only when you connect your device via USB.
2. Open Kies. When a new version of firmware is available, you will see a notice on the Basic information tab
3. Click Firmware upgrade to start the upgrade process.
4. You will be taken through the backup process to preserve all of your data.
Android 5.1.1 Lollipop brings in a new Material Design, more notification controls, device sharing and device sync, among others.
