ABC’s "Rookie Blue" concluded its sixth season weeks ago, ending things among Andy and co. that felt like a series finale. Although there’s been no official announcement made by the alphabet network, it's palpable that the fate of the cop drama is hanging by a thread.
"Rookie Blue" creator and showrunner Tassie Cameron hashed out the Sept. 3rd season finale in a report, citing the uncertainties they had to deal with as they were writing the final hour. “We weren’t sure what was going to happen, so we tried to make it a satisfying conclusion in case it is the end of the show, but with lots of openings to indicate new kinds of characters if we were to reboot the series,” Cameron told TV Line. The executive producer also admitted that they did intend to construct it as a potential series finale. She further explained, “It’s more conclusive than some of our season enders, which have been a bit more cliffhanger-y.”
While the renewal seems to be a long shot for now, actress Missy Peregrym who portrays Andy on the cop drama, is happy to work behind the scenes should ABC grants “Rookie Blue” a seventh season. “If we move forward, I was offered the position to produce. To me, I feel like I was already kind of doing that, like an on-set producer,” she shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
She also echoed her thoughts about possibly helming episode if given the chance. “Directing … I don’t know. Maybe one day, but I really love what I do, and I love the opportunity that I have on set and to be with the people that I am in that world, the actress enthused.
According to a report from the Master Herald, the weekly performance of “Rookie Blue” have been weak compared to CBS’ "Under the Dome" – a strong indication that could potentially put the cop drama straight to the chopping board. “When the TV ratings were released for August 20, it showed that “Under the Dome” had a 13% rise from its ratings compared to the week before with 0.9/3 viewership score, while “Rookie Blue” dropped 17% from its previous week’s rating with a 0.5/2 viewership aggregate”, the site noted.
After airing its sixth season finale, “Rookie Blue” is looking at a dark future. The soft performance in ratings of the cop drama might push the ABC Network to finally pull the show from airing. Despite of the discouraging news, series star Missy Peregrym remains hopeful for the series, even jumping in to take a role as an executive producer to work behind-the-scenes.
