In case people haven't heard yet, "Maniac Cop" is getting a remake treatment and will start shooting next spring in New York City. Also, it is reported that director John Hyams will do the helming job for the upcoming film.

According to /Film, the scoop about the film's director was first made known by producer Nicolas Winding Refn at Fantastic Fest. However, it was director John Hyams himself who confirmed the news via his Twitter account. "It's true. A tremendous opportunity - collaborating with Nicolas Winding Refn, from a phenomenal script by Ed Brubaker," he wrote.

Hyams is best known for directing "Universal Soldier: Regeneration" and "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning." The director also reportedly claimed that "Maniac Cop" remake is the follow up movie that he's been waiting for.

Games Radar reported that the film entered the development stage few years ago, with the director of the 1988 original William Lustig and writer Larry Cohen spearheading the efforts. Shortly after, however, Refn signed up as the producer and comic book scribe Ed Brubaker joined to redraft the script.

Meanwhile, Variety reported that Hyams is aiming to shoot the film in the spring of next year, while the production location will be at the Big City. The filmmaker told the publication that he came aboard to direct right after Lustig sought him out.

"I'm a huge admirer of both producers and I'd been looking to do something that bridges the gap between action and horror like this." When asked about the script, he said, "The script is able to re-invent the original with the same mythology." Hyams admitted that the initial plan was to shoot this fall, but "we decided on the spring to give ourselves enough time to get the best cast and crew."

The "Maniac Cop" remake will reportedly have a budget of between $5 million and $6 million, and is believed to have a shooting range of 25 days, as it starts filming next spring. Nevertheless, despite director John Hyams revealing New York City as the film location, further details about the film's storyline and release date are still under wraps.
