Samsung Galaxy Note 3's upgrade to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop looms as successor Galaxy Note 4 under Canadian mobile carriers has just begun receiving the same update. Major mobile carriers are considerably preparing for the rollout of the final Lollipop update expected to hit the Galaxy Note 3 before the year ends.
The four biggest mobile carriers in the US Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T are reported releasing the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for Galaxy Note 3 units. US Cellular, deemed fifth biggest carrier here, has pioneered the same update last month.
The upgrade report was prompted by the news that Canadian carriers Bell and Telus have just pushed the update to Galaxy Note 4 beginning yesterday through an over-the-air rollout. Apparently, Android Lollipop's final software upgrade will bring in new features and improvements.
Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular and AT&T have not released the update as well to Galaxy Note 4 while Sprint has done the update already. Current software status of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is as follows:
Mobile Carrier | Software Version |
AT&T | Android 5.0 Lollipop |
Sprint | Android 5.0 Lollipop |
T-Mobile | Android 4.4.2 KitKat |
Verizon Wireless | Android 5.0 Lollipop |
Galaxy Note 3 users have turned to community forums on tech sites and carriers' support pages to hasten the Android update for the device. Although US Cellular was able to roll out the update, Samsung's support page stated that the device still is running on Android 5.0 Lollipop version.
Neither Verizon nor any other carrier has spoken regarding this issue. However, there are new reports suggesting that Galaxy Note 3 from these carriers might be getting the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. This has neither been confirmed by the carriers.
Other Samsung smartphones and tablets have already received the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop including the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Tab 4 8.0, Galaxy Grand Prime, Galaxy Core Prime, Galaxy Mega 2, and Galaxy J1.
The update comes with new features and improvements in Material Design user interface, fingerprint scanner and USB Type-C support, device sharing, and device sync. The update of the Canadian carriers weighed 641.23 MB so future Android 5.1.1 update for the American carriers should also be just around this figure.
Android 5.1.1 Lollipop shall come automatically over-the-air when device is connected to Wi-Fi. To manually check device, head over to Settings > About device > Software update > Check for updates.
Meanwhile, a custom ROM based on the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop software version is also available. The ROM was created by Emotroid which brings in native features with the update.
