Is Google planning holographic future for Glass a.k.a. Project Aura with new patent to rival Microsoft Hololens?

By

Google recently filed a patent application suggesting its plans to create a holographic future with Google Glass renamed as Project Aura. If successful, the holographic Glass could rival Microsoft Hololens in the field of smart wearable tech.

Gizmodo reported that the patent application published by Google indicated the use of holographic images with a head wearable display. The patent says that the "optical apparatus for a head wearable display ... includes a lightguide, in-coupling holograms, and an out-coupling optical element". By adding this feature to Glass, it is possible to create augmented reality experiences with computer-generated imagery (CGI).

The patent, filed last March 2014, further says, "With augmented reality the viewer's image of the world is augmented with an overlaying CGI, also referred to as a heads-up display." Instead of flat images, a holographic Google Glass will have the ability to produce realistic, 3D pictures to create an immersive virtual reality experience, Tech Gadget Central published in a report.

According to a report by Times of India, an effective smart eyewear should project content that can interact with the real world. If implemented successfully, a holographic Google Glass can be used in many ways. It can have applications in the fields of gaming, aerospace, public safety, transportation, and communication.

There are various applications of a smart holographic eyewear, but are limited by different factors. "There is certain to be new found practical and leisure applications as the technology evolves; however, many of these applications are limited due to the cost, size, weight, field of view, and efficiency of conventional optical systems used to implemented existing head mounted displays (HMDs)," the patent said.

If speculations ring true, the future Google Glass could rival Microsoft Hololens especially in video gaming. It will have the same capability, features, and application as that of Hololens. A holographic Google Glass can make games seem real, providing an immersive gaming environment for the user.

Google has not confirmed anything about Google Glass or Project Aura with holographic images. It is possible that the rumored holographic Google Glass will be the top smart wearable technology in the future if it will be successfully developed.
