Tuesday’s episode of "The Mindy Project" found Dr. Lahiri struggling to juggle being a mom and a career woman in New York City. Although Danny is almost the perfect guy for her, it remains to be seen as to whether Mindy should sacrifice her professional career to fulfill her responsibility as a mother to baby Leo and as a life partner to Danny.
The episode aptly titled “The B*tch Is Back” followed the storyline of Danny as he begged for Mindy’s approval to become a stay at home mom. But knowing Mindy, she’s just not someone who will give up something she’s passionate about, let alone have someone control her feminism beliefs. Case in point: Danny Castellano.
This flaw of Dr. C has been pointed out by Vulture in a recap, stressing out the character’s inherent nature of being almost too conservative, “I love how they play with Danny’s conservative streak, even to the point of likely annoying most of the women who watch this show. I love Danny, but, ugh, he’s been hitting all my feminist nerves lately,” the publication wrote.
Although viewers can’t blame Danny for wanting Mindy to be there full time for their first born, "The Mindy Project" manages to play with this plot by allowing the supporting characters voice their opinion with a reasonable argument. According to TV Overmind, Xosha Roquemore’s funny Nurse Tamra is the perfect character to convey this message. “As Tamara says to Danny in one of the episode’s best moments, Mindy’s sacrificed so much already for their relationship and their child, but what has he done?” the site wrote.
Fans were introduced to Chris Messina’s character in season one as slightly antagonistic, even becoming one of Mindy’s frenemies at the office. Now that the Hulu comedy has evolved to the point of allowing them become parents, it will be a challenge for the writers to make Danny stay true to his character while also being likeable.
Entertainment Weekly worries that Danny’s personality of being a control freak might hurt his relationship with Mindy Kaling’s character in the process. “After Mindy’s speech last week about how Danny needs to let her be, I expected to see less of his controlling behavior. We’ve certainly seen quite a lot of it in the past seasons (strict Trainer Danny, strict Nutritionist Danny, strict Dad Danny, etc.), and it’s still going strong,” the site commented.
The Mindy Project’s latest outing centered on Danny and Mindy adjusting to become parents and as professional individuals at the same time. With the arrival of baby Leo, Danny’s inherent nature of being too conservative and a control freak is becoming a conflict to his relationship with Mindy. As the fans follow the comedy in the coming weeks, viewers have yet to learn if Mindy can make the ultimate sacrifice of giving up her career in exchange for Danny’s happiness.
The Mindy Project airs every Tuesday on Hulu.
