'The Last Witch Hunter' lead protagonist Vin Diesel was essential to the development of the film. His co-stars Rose Leslie and Joseph Gilgun talked about the opposing supernatural characters they had to play.
According to an interview with HitFix, Canton revealed that casting Diesel was one of the best things that ever happened for the film. The producer admitted that putting the right actor in the lead role was a make or break deal for the team that worked on the project for years.
When asked about the importance of getting Diesel involved he said, "Well, we actually only wanted Vin. We never talked about anybody else, which is crazy. Not to say someone else couldn't have played the role, but we never talked about anybody else. So we did reach the point which is Vin or no movie, because we were so committed that he was the right character."
The upcoming fantasy-action film will revolve around Kaulder, a witch-hunter cursed with immortality, as he battles fantastical monsters from supernatural realm to save humanity from a threatening plague.
According to a synopsis posted by Dread Central, Kaulder will have to deal with a powerful Queen Witch who has been resurrected and seeks vengeance against him. The witch-hunter ironically recruits a witch to help him defeat his great foe as well as her followers.
Rose Leslie, famed for her role as Ygritte in HBO's 'Game of Thrones', will be playing Chloe - a witch who becomes Kaulder's comrade. Joseph Gilgun, famed for his role as Eli Dingle in ITV's 'Emmerdale', is all set to play Ellic - a shapeshifter dedicated to serving the villainous Queen Witch.
In an interview with Collider, Leslie and Gilgun shared some tidbits about their respective characters as well as their working experience with Deisel on 'The Last Witch Hunter'. Leslie described Chloe as a young and independent woman living in modern New York City who runs a memory bar. She added that Chloe is a good witch although she deals in the lucrative trade of prescription drugs.
Gilgun, on the other hand, talked about his antagonistic character Ellic. He described Ellic as a zealous yet lethal shapeshifter under the service of the Queen Witch. He added that his character felt no remorse when he harmed priests and children.
The two co-actors agreed that it was a great experience to work alongside Diesel. They revealed that the 'Furious 7' actor was a fan of improvisations and that he was good with adapting with the complexities of his role.
'The Last Witch Hunter' is an upcoming supernatural fantasy-adventure film scheduled to be released on October 23, 2015. It is directed by Breck Eisner and written for the big-screen by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
