‘Silence’ Cast News: Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson recovering from intense roles

By

'Silence' cast news include lead actors Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson both trying to normalize after the filming of the movie. Martin Scorsese's 'Silence' required a drastic weight loss from Neeson while Garfield shaves off his massive beard. Garfield also comments on white privilege and religion, which is central to 'Silence'.

Belfast Telegraph reported that Neeson's gaunt look was not due to health problems. The 63 year old actor lost 60lbs for his role in 'Silence'. According to the source, the actor is "as healthy as ever and as hungry for work as ever." The weight loss was due to his changing diet, which was originally meant "to just shave a bit off his beer gut for his movie 'Silence' but went a little too far." Neeson plays Fr. Cristovao Ferreira, a priest who was tortured, forcing him to renounce Christianity in medieval Japan.

On the other hand, Garfield has chopped off the massive beard he grew for 'Silence'. Most recently, he displayed his stubbly appearance in his interview with Vulture. The 32-year-old British actor talked about religion, though in a very different way than one might expect.

"Celebrity is the new religion," Garfield said. He puts it together with "money, power, status" which he collectively called seductive forces of evil. Garfield broached the subject when he was asked about wealth, power and acceptance as an actor.

The actor talked about his struggles with fame, and how most celebrities, even he, were pressured to be someone they are not. Similarly, the character he plays in 'Silence', young Jesuit Fr. Sebastiao Rodrigues, goes through struggles that conflict with who he is and what he believes in.

These 'Silence' cast news comes after the movie is rumored to be premiered in Cannes. While the first trailer has not been released, a novel entitled Approaching 'Silence' was published this year. According to The Film Stage, it is a collection of essays on the real-life background of 'Silence', by Shusaku Endo. Martin Scorsese provides the afterword in the recent publication, as he is the director of the live-action movie of 'Silence'.

Scorsese was also invited by the 39th Sao Paulo International Film Festival to help honor the 25th Anniversary of The Film Foundation. As such, he offered up a storyboard for a "crucial" scene in the film, which seems to find Garfield's character in danger

'Silence' comes out sometime in 2016, with no exact date yet. Neeson and Garfield are joined by Adam Driver, who also plays a Jesuit priest in the Scorsese-directed film. More 'Silence' cast news is expected when the movie releases its first trailer.
