Sony Published Android 6.0 Marshmallow Sources for Xperia Devices; Open for ROM Customization

By

Sony has just recently posted the source, binary, and config files of Android 6.0 Marshmallow online. The AOSP (Android Open Source Project) resources, however, are mostly for developing custom ROMs for the high-end XPeria smartphones and tablets. This also includes the upcoming Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact as part of its Open Device program.

Since ROM developers are given the privileged to modify the ROMs for Sony's 2014 and 2015 Qualcomm-based Xperia devices, ordinary users will also likely get customized Android Marshmallow ROMs even if their device is not on Sony's list of Xperia devices.

The devices selected to receive software binaries for the AOSP Marshmallow include Xperia models that were not on Sony's initial list of those that will get the Android 6.0 update. These are the Xperia Tablet Z, Z Ultra, Z, ZL, Z1, Z1 Compact, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z3, Z3+, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact, Z4 Tablet, E3, M2, T2 Ultra and T3/

Sony Mobile has provided a complete list of the devices in the Open Device Program as well as their corresponding links for their binaries, config files, and other sources. This would allow developers to customized the ROMs for each XPeria model.

The upcoming Sony flagship devices should also receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow update starting December 2016. The Xperia Z5 series will also be among those to get the update, followed by the Xperia Z4 tablet, Xperia Z3+ handset, and the 2013 Xperia Z3 smartphones.

More Xperia handsets will be included in Sony's Android 6.0, rollout scheme with custom ROMs to become available pretty soon. For now, developers can dig in with what Sony has to offer for now in its Open Device Program, and perhaps come up with their own custom Android Marshmallow ROMs for XPeria as well as for other line of Android devices.
