Despite previous reports that the upcoming Power Rangers movie will be a reboot, new details about the film suggest it will keep the mythology of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Casting for the film is also in the works as Naomi Scott was recently added as to play as the Pink Ranger.
It was previously assumed that the new film will be a reboot with Rita Repulsa returning as the villain. However, according to /Film it might not be the case as new details suggest that the villain will be one of Rita Repulsa's minion, the half humanoid Scorpina.
As new reports suggest, speculations are heavy that the film will begin with a fight between Zordon along with the Power Rangers against Rita, and in order to defeat her, Zordon creates a black hole which was used to get rid of her. It then jumps to the world of new Power Rangers. However, given that the film will be set after the events in Power Rangers: Dino Charge, Rita Repulsa, and Lord Zedd will have been vanished by the Z-Wave.
Thus, it will be Scorpina who will fight against the new heroes, and her evil objective will be to destroy the Morphin Grid. The Grid is essential to the Rangers since it provides them with powers and allows them to see the memories of the past and future rangers in order to help them in their battles. However, until it is confirmed these details must be treated with a grain of salt.
Moreover, casting for the film is currently underway. Scott was recently casted as Pink Ranger although it was not revealed whether she will play 'Kimberly' or a new character altogether. According to Franchise Herald, Austin Butler, Mitchell Hope, and KJ Apa are in on the running to play as the Red Ranger, while Ross Butler, Brian Marc, and Daniel Zovatto are being considered to play as Black Ranger.
According to Screen Rant, Dean Israelite previously revealed that he is aiming for a "mature and playful" tone for the film that is in some way similar to Marvel films. Principal photography is expected to begin early next year.
The upcoming Power Rangers will be directed by Israelite, and written by Ashley Miller along with Zack Stentz. It will be produced by Brian Casentini, Haim Saban, and Allison Shearmur. It is scheduled for a January 13, 2017 play date.
