Season two of "The Strain" concluded with a death that nobody expected, but the series showrunners assure that her sacrifice will not end in vain and instead, will do a lot of good for Eph in the show's upcoming return.
Fans of the critically lauded FX series "The Strain" were stunned to witness Nora (portrayed by actress Mia Maestro) being killed off during the second season finale of the show. The Hollywood Reporter's summary of saw final episode of season two saw Eph (Corey Stroll) and Nora fighting for survival and ensuring Zack's (Max Charles) well-being by deciding to escape to New York.
However, with threats from strigoi waiting to devour them at any given chance, the team goes to Washington with hopes to acquire sufficient weaponry. This quest led to an altercation with Zack's mom Kelly (Natalie Brown) which ultimately resulted to Nora's surprising demise.
This unexpected turn of events stunned viewers who also read the books, as it was pretty much established that Nora was able to survive up until the end.
Series creator Carlton Cuse tells TV Line that Nora's death was necessary to solidify the story as well as steer it into a direction where it needs to be come season three.
"[Killing Nora] was a very hard decision, because Mia Maestro is one of the most wonderful people you'll meet and a very fine actress, but on some level, the audience needs to be told narratively that no one is safe," Cuse said.
This specific turning point will also be crucial to the growth of Eph's character who, as series writer Chuck Hogan would describe, has been "lacking the needed energy" for the show's narrative.
"I feel like the events of the final episode of Season 2 are going to push him even further in Season 3, and I'm really excited about where that's going," Hogan told the International Business Times.
With all the unfortunate events coming in one by one for Eph, season three will drive him to the depths of his anger as he seeks for revenge for Nora and Zack as he continues with his desire to improve on bio weaponry that will ultimately drive away the evil forces plaguing them once and for all.
Season three of "The Strain" is scheduled to air next year on FX.
