During The Coalition's E3 reveal of Gears of War 4, its developers spilled out some updates and improvements to the war game. They also promised to treat all the errors and shortcomings in the previous games and assured to bring back what made the first game interesting.
On the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo, IGN had the chance to talk to The Coalition's Rod Fergusson regarding the updates of Gears of War. In the interview, Fergusson said that Gears of War 4 was meant to treat the lack of action in Gears of War. He also added that the developers will try to return the sense of mystery, which is what made the first game interesting and original to the gaming community. The trailer focused on young soldiers, probably in their mid-20s, which, according to Fergusson has still much to be developed. "There's a greater opportunity" he explained the reason behind the age of the characters. The impact of the game on the character can be greater, Fergusson added.
It was also hinted that the game would generally deal with morality in a more subtle and ambiguous manner, unlike the previous games. At present, people want a more flexible interpretation of what is right and what is wrong, Fergusson believes. With this, the developers believe that player's expectations about narratives have greatly changed; Gamespot commented. A story which is something personal, intimate, dark and mysterious is to be expected from the game.
According to Gaming Bolt, Gears of War 4 shall focus on the fear of the alien creatures, rather than seeing them as enemy combatants. The trailer depicted soldiers combating a creature which appears to be obviously out of this world; not just an enemy soldier.
Treating its shortcomings in the previous Gears of War games, a lot of darkness, fear, and mystery is to be expected from Gears of War 4. As The Coalition Head C.J. Fergusson reveals, the game will now focus on moral ambiguity and fear, rather than plain combat.
