In case you missed, ABC has officially pulled the plug on Rookie Blue after six seasons of airing. The cop drama, created by Tassie Cameron, aired its series finale last September. After getting the axe, it remains to be seen if the future of the show will be brighter.
As reported by Deadline, a statement has been released by Christine Shipton, Shaw Media SVP and CCO following the announcement made last Friday.
“The success of Rookie Blue is a testament not only to the extremely talented team of Ilana Frank, Tassie Cameron, David Wellington and studio Entertainment One. but the electrifying cast that has resonated with legions of fans that have followed the show since Season 1,” the network exec said.
“After six seasons the series reached a natural conclusion, and this season’s finale was the perfect wrap-up for both our rookies and for fans,” she continued.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Rookie Blue provided a host of stable performance for ABC on its Thursday night block.
"The show — starring Missy Peregrym, Ben Bass, Gregory Smith, and Enuka Okuma — has been a staple in ABC’s summer slate since 2010. Its Sept. 3 series finale, episode 74, drew 3.68 million viewers."
However, it can be assumed that Tassie Cameron’s decision to step down as showrunner is partly a reason for the cancellation.
“I feel like I told the story I wanted to tell,” the former executive producer said in a recent interview.
Although fans weren’t able to swallow the cancellation easily, Master Herald cited that atleast they already saw it coming.
“And it seems that fans were expecting that “Rookie Blue” will no longer be back for Season 7 too as many of the questions were already answered and loose strings were also tied up. Best of all, show protagonists Police Officer Andy McNally, played by Missy Peregrym, tied the knot with Detective Sam Swarek, played by Ben Bass,” the publication wrote.
Rookie Blue was officially cancelled by ABC after six seasons, tying up major loose ends and ultimately giving fans a satisfying series finale. To this end, it seems unlikely that the series will still be resurrected by other networks. Fans who are still hungry for more will have to wait and see for further developments.
