'Silence' director Martin Scorcese revealed that working on the script for live-action adaptation of Shusaku Endo's historical fiction novel took 10 years. Leading actor Andrew Garfield shares his experience on working with the famed filmmaker.
According to Variety, Scorcese admitted that it took a long time before he finally got the chance to film 'Silence'. He said that pre-production was complicated, beginning with the script since he ran into legal issues with the chain of titles for the adaptation. He said, "After 'Hugo,' it became clear we could make 'Silence,' certainly not on the budget of 'Hugo' or 'Wolf of Wall Street,' but we knew we could get it made."
Another article from the Film Stage reported that Scorcese was invited by the 39th Sao Paolo International Film Festival to design the poster for the 25th anniversary of the film foundation where he offered up a crucial scene in 'Silence' in the form of a storyboard. It looked to feature two characters bound together in what looked to be an impending execution at the hands of the Japanese.
Garfield shared his experience with working with Scorcese during an interview with Collider. He said, "Incredible. He is... he's him. He's Scorcese. All that comes with such weight and a kind of reverence, you know, for me and for obviously all of us. But then you get in there and you kind of just go 'I cant. I can't carry that with me.' I've got to just let that go and just focus on the little task at hand... 'Coz if I think about the fact that he's been wanting to make this with all these different actors over the course of the last - whatever - I'll lose my mind."
The leading actor added that despite the intensity of getting the opportunity to work with one of Hollywood's most sought-after directors, he was honored to help make Scorcese's vision a reality as well as being part of such a project.
The American-English actor plays 17th Century Portuguese Jesuit priest Father Sebastião Rodrigues. The film follows the story of two Jesuit priests who face violent persecution in Japan after spreading the teachings Christianity as well seeking out their mentor who has allegedly committed apostasy.
'Silence' an upcoming historical drama film based on the critically-acclaimed novel by Japanese author Shusaku Endo. It is scheduled for release sometime in 2016. It stars Garfield, Liam Neeson, Adam Driver, Ciaran Hinds, Tadanobu Asano and Shinya Tsukamoto.
