The mystery behind Gwen Stefani's new song "Used To Love You" is finally resolved. When the ballad was released, it moved millions of people with its heart-piercing melody and lyrics. Immediately, fans speculated that the song speaks about Stefani's recent divorce with Gavin Rossdale.
In the recent episode of American talk show Today, Gwen Stefani, alongside fellow The Voice coaches Pharrell Williams, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, made an appearance to promote its show's eighth season. But host Matt Lauer didn't miss this chance to ask the relation of break-up song "Used To Love You" to Gwen's ex-husband.
The host phrased the bomb question with: "Are fans misinterpreting something here or is it all right there in front of us in terms of the song?"
"Oh my God! Put me on the spot!" The 46-year old singer reacted and stammered for a while. Yet despite having caught off-guard, Gwen managed to answer the host in earnest.
"What I'll say about that, is that I've never put a record out where I'm actually going through things in real time," Gwen started. "I wrote that song like a couple weeks ago, and then I sat in front of a camera in a dressing room randomly - not making a video - just to do some video for the screens behind me. And then it went out, and it was the video, and it's, like, all very real."
Now that Gwen is going through things in real time, and having finished this heart-breaking song at the same period, things just got real. Though 'The Voice' coach may have denied the direct connection between the song and her ex-husband, in future shows or appearances when Gwen sings this song, her story and what she went through with Gavin could definitely inspire and empower the soul of "Used To Love You."
After 13 years of marriage, Gwen and Gavin decided to divorce. While the two are officially separated they have both agreed to remain partners in parenthood and will share custody to their three sons.
