Faulty i7 processors could be behind freeze locks experienced by users with the new Microsoft Surface Book. Microsoft plans to fix reported bugs with Windows Update.
Microsoft has just released the Surface Book, the company's premium hybrid device. But just days after the Surface Book's launch, Microsoft is getting numerous complaints from customers who have purchased the device.
Users are complaining that their Microsoft Surface Books are experiencing freeze locks and other problems with the display, keyboard, camera, and touchpad. Computerworld reported that users had no choice but to reboot their Surface Books to recover from freezes. But the problem seems to be recurrent on the device.
The freeze locks seemed to only occur on Surface Books with i7 processors. Many users generalized that the freezing could be caused by faulty i7 chips - particularly the integrated graphics portion - embedded in the Surface Books. A Surface Book owner with username 'sbny02' said, "I have this issue with an i7/256GB/8GB model. I also have a second Surface Book, i5/256GB/8GB which has not exhibited any issues."
Microsoft is reportedly trying to address the issues with a software update, said Tech Insider. The company said, "A small number of customers have flagged some issues with their Surface Book. We are working hard to resolve them quickly and easily with Windows Update." Users are wondering if a software update could successfully fix the problems in the Surface Book.
Other Microsoft Surface Book bugs reported by users include problems with the display, performance, camera, touchpad, and OS of the device. Some said that the keyboard does not completely detach from the screen. The device also lags and its Windows 10 OS crashes after update installations.
The Inquirer reported that Microsoft aims to rival the MacBook Pro with the new Surface Book. However, due to the launch bugs of the Surface Book, Microsoft's goal could be hindered. It was reported that many Microsoft Surface Book customers have either asked for a replacement of the device or a total refund.
New hardware is usually expected to come with bugs. It might still be too early for the Surface Book to win against the MacBook Pro unless Microsoft fixes all the issues soon.
