The compelling post-apocalyptic journey of Rick Grimes and his followers will continue to bring gore to our small screens. On Friday, AMC has officially renewed "The Walking Dead" for a seventh season. It is slated to kick off sometime in 2016.
According to The Huffington Post, the new season pickup comes after the show’s most recent outing where viewers saw Steve Yeun’s Glenn get eaten by a hoard of zombies. The boost in ratings pushed the cable network to grant the series another run.
Variety has shared the statement released by AMC, AMC Studios and SundanceTV president Charlie Collier following the announcement
“We are so proud to share these shows with fans who have been so passionate, communicative and engaged,” he enthused.
Collier further added that the network is thankful and “continually impressed” by the skills and efforts of The Walking Dead executive producers: Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, and Chris Hardwick.
The cable network has also renewed the talk show “The Talking Dead” who shared the same success as the zombie smash. It is hosted by comedian Chris Hardwick.
According to Entertainment Weekly, last Sunday’s episode was an absolute game changer for The Walking Dead.
The Oct. 25th installment targeted a total of 18.2 million viewers – with 12 million coming from the 18-49 demographic.
As to whether Glenn is still alive, showrunners Scott Gimple nor Robert Kirkman have not yet released a comment addressing his future in season six. Fans are still hopeful that the character whom they’ve met since the pilot could still be alive.
On a lighter note, the season 7 renewal is clearly something the walker fans should celebrate. "The Walking Dead" is now proving to be one of the shows that is making a mark in telling gripping and fresh story arcs every year. New storylines and casting additions for the new bunch of episodes have yet to be announce by AMC in the coming months.
"The Walking Dead" airs every Sunday at 10PM on AMC.
