‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ Moving Forward with Official 2018 Release Date; Director Genndy Tartakovsky Not Returning to Focuses on Other Projects

'Hotel Transylvania 3' is moving forward with or without a director. The sequel to the highly popular animated film is scheduled for a September 2018 release date despite Genndy Tartakovsky's departure from the series as the filmmaker wants to focus on other projects.

According to IGN, Sony Pictures Animation revealed that the third installment in the series is set to be released in theaters on September 21, 2018. This would put it in the running together with an upcoming yet-titled 'Scooby Doo' animated film. It remains unknown whether the original voice actors behind the beloved characters will be returning to reprise their roles.

The film's predecessor featured an all-star ensemble with Adam Sandler in the lead role of Count Dracula, according to Coming Soon. Other voice talents include Selena Gomez as Dracula's daughter Mavis, Adam Samberg as Mavis' human husband Jonathan, Kevin James as Frankenstein, Fran Drescher as Frankenstein's wife Eunice, Steve Buscemi as Wayne the werewolf, Molly Shannon as Wayne's wife Wanda, David Spade as Griffin the Invisible Man, CeeLo Green as Murray the mummy, and Jon Lovitz as Quasimodo. Both the first and second films in the series were directed by Genndy Tartakovsky.

Tartakovsky is best known for his work on Cartoon Network animated favorites including 'Dexter's Laboratory', 'Star Wars: Clone Wars', and 'Samurai Jack'. He eventually joined Sony Pictures Animation for his 2012 directorial debut 'Hotel Transylvania'.

The Russian-born American animator and filmmaker told the Wrap, "'Hotel Transylvania 3' is going to happen without me... Two is enough. I have a lot of other ideas, and I kind of have to express them and have them come out." He said that he felt compelled to focus on other planned projects, such as an animated film 'Can You Imagine?'

'Hotel Transylvania 3' is a planned sequel to the popular 3D-animated series of films revolving around Count Dracula who owns and manages a hotel establishment catering to his fellow supernatural friends. Its predecessor was released in 2015 and earned $374 million against an $80 million budget. Like the first film, it received mixed reviews but undeniable financial success.
