With the latest entry in the series selling over 5 millions copies to date, the company behind the critically acclaimed title is now readying it plans for the next installment in the franchise, Metal Gear Solid 6.

According to Daily Express, Konami has repeatedly denied the rumours that company will shift its focus on the other areas of the gaming industry and exploring the possibilities for the follow up to the Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

An unnamed representative from Konami who made a comment about the project is also quoted saying: "When we start development, a large-scale investment will become necessary." Konami apparently budgeted $80 million for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

With Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain confirmed to have shipped over five million copies of the game worldwide, Geek notes that a large-scale investment on a follow-up makes sense. Reportedly, Konami is now into discussions about developing Metal Gear Solid 6 and it is still unknown if the series creator Hideo Kojima will be part of the project.

Kojima is simply "on vacation" despite the reports saying that a farewell party was already held in the offices of Kojima Productions last month. The Los Angeles studio is said to have shut down giving way for development of the next large-scale investment Metal Gear Solid project.

Tech Times reported that the outspoken George Broussard, the game developer of Duke Nukem 3D, "lit" the "gossip fire" when he alleged that Konami closed Kojima Productions in LA and laid off all of its employees. The report quotes Broussard in his Twitter saying, "Rumor tells me that Konami has shut down the Kojima Productions LA studio, taking with it approx 35 jobs, just before Xmas."

But the future of the franchise is still unclear for now since there seems to be new twists in the story and the reports every few weeks.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain released on September 1 for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC/Steam was a tremendous success prompting that a Metal Gear Solid 6 could be in the works.
