'Captain Marvel' gets its newest fan-casting favorite. Olivia Wilde is currently the latest actress tagged to play the lead role for Marvel's upcoming female-fronted superhero film to which she openly expressed enthusiasm for on Twitter. Jennifer Lawrence also hinted at her interest to play the iconic Carol Danvers.
According to Moviepilot, fans have added another actress to the ever-growing roster of Hollywood favorites to play the much coveted role of Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel. Olivia Wilde is the latest to jump at the opportunity to play the iconic Marvel superhero.
Reed Morano, Wilde's director for her film 'Meadowland', posted on his Twitter account that she would like to helm the female-fronted superhero film if she was offered the part to which Wilde commented that she would join in as Captain Marvel. The 31-year old actress joked that she was already starting a Marvel superhero diet of "egg shells and jet fuel" only.
In another interview with Cinema Blend, Wilde shared her opinions regarding female superheroes created for a big-screen audience. She said, "I'm a big fan of superhero films, and I have so much respect for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The thing with female superheroes is that, in order to be powerful, they are flawless. The idea of kick-a** power lacks a certain nuance, at times. There is something to be said for a female director working to create a female superhero that perhaps [has] a little more complexity." She added that a female superhero should be an "unexpected and complex" as well as flawed character.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence played it coy when asked about her involvement in the upcoming 'Captain Marvel' film. According to Comic Book Resources, she was asked whether she'd like to "play in the same sandbox with Bradley Cooper and Chris Pratt" as Captain Marvel to which she answered, "Well, yes! I would love to play in a sandbox with those two!"
It remains unclear whether Lawrence was just dodging the casting question with a witty comeback or if she has indeed been offered the role of the titular Carol Danvers. Cooper and Pratt are both well-known for their roles in Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' series.
'Captain Marvel' is an upcoming addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) Phase Three. It is scheduled for release on March 8, 2019 with Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve on-board to pen the script. It will be Marvel's first standalone film to be fronted by a female superhero.
