'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' finally put together an official cast and is said to keep the characters' original names. Jason, Billy, Kimberly, Zack and Trini will be returning to the big-screen as a cast of fresh new faces. Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller of 'X-Men: First Class' and 'Thor' will be penning the upcoming reboot's screenplay.
According to NBC News, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers has finally completed casting for the titular characters Kimberly, Jason, Zack, Billy and Trini. English actress and singer Naomi Scott, who appeared in 'The Martian' and in the science-fiction series 'Terra Nova' will play Kimberly the Pink Ranger. Joining her are newcomers Dacre Montgomery, Ludi Lin and RJ Cyler to play Jason the Red Ranger, Zack the Black Ranger and Billy the Blue Ranger respectively.
American rapper and YouTube sensation Becky Gomez, otherwise known as Becky G, is the final one to join the cast as Trini the Yellow Ranger. According to A.V. Club, no updates regarding the Green Ranger has come up. It remains unclear whether the character, played by Jason David Frank back in the 90's, will be making a big-screen comeback at all.
The new action-fantasy reboot of the popular children's television show will be directed by Dean Israelite. Joining him are writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz for the new screenplay. According to the Inquisitr, the two are frequent collaborators who have worked on several blockbuster hits together including 'X-Men: First Class', 'Thor', 'Agent Cody Banks' and television show 'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles'.
As of the present, the franchise spawned 22 television show seasons, two full-feature theatrical releases and several video games. The franchise was originally owned by the Walt Disney Company but rights were regained by the series' original creator Haim Saban in 2010.
'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' is a modern remake of the popular children's television series of the same name first released in August 28, 1993. The franchise follows the adventures of a team of teenage superheroes fighting off evil space invaders. Most footage from the original series was derived from the Japanese show 'Super Sentai'.
