Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim 2 Still Awaits Greenlight from WB; 'Tales from the Drift' Comic book 1st Issue Released

Guillermo del Toro has submitted the budget and script for Pacific Rim 2. But while the wait for the green light from Legendary and Warner Bros continue, fans can dive into the world of Jaegers and their pilots through its comic tie-in, "Tales from the Drift".

The fate of Pacifi Rim 2 is now in the hands of the studios as Del Toro confirmed that the budget and script have been submitted. As reported by IGN, the director made the confirmation via Twitter. "PACIFIC RIM 2: Budget and script went in. No answers yet. If anything happens, I will post. If nothing happens, I will just keep rambling.", Del Toro wrote.

The film was taken out from its previous 2017 release date and is currently in indefinite hold. However, the world of Jaegers and Kaijus have been made more accessible recently with Legendary Comics' "Tales from the Drift".

During his interview with MTV, writer Travis Beacham revealed more about the comics. According to Beacham, it is set a bit after "Tales From Year Zero" but still before the events of the film. "Tales from the Drift" tells the story of two pilots, Duc and Kaori and their Jaeger, Tacit Ronan.

Beacham said that both characters and their Jaeger were in the first draft of the first film but were eventually taken out. They will be the focus of the new comic book series. During his talk with Geek Scape, writer Joshua Hale Fialkov also confirmed that the comics will delve into the romantic love story arc, which was not deeply tackled in the first film.

"So we get to follow this love story of two pilots who are now deeply in love and how their love is the thing that either saves or dooms them in the process of fighting this gigantic monster. And like I said, what I'm proudest of really is that it's very much a story about the people inside the Jaeger while still having literally eleven pages of monster fighting", Fialkov said.

Meanwhile, when asked about whether he believes in the sequel in progress, Beacham said he thinks there is still life for the project, and that there's always a possibility for more "Pacific Rim". He also agreed about Maisie William's inclusion in the cast. "I think that would be fantastic. Yeah, definitely, definitely. Few people would be more excited about that than me", he said.

When Pacific Rim 2 gets greenlit, it will be directed and written by Guillermo del Toro. No actors have been confirmed for the film although Charlie Hunnam's Raleigh Beckett, and Ron Perlman's Hannibal Chau are heavily linked to the project. The first film earned $411 million from its $101 million domestically and $309 million overseas, according to Box Office Mojo.
