Google Nexus 6P Glass Panels Shatters For No Reason

By

The Google Nexus 6P reveals its imperfections, as early owners of the Marshmallow-powered device are reporting that the glass-covered rear of the handset is spontaneously cracking even if users do not apply pressure to the surface.

According to The Inquirer, users who were quick to get the Huawei-built phones, were also quick to rant on social media about the rear-facing glass panel shattering for no apparent reason. What is most surprising about this is that the glass on the rear end is supposed to be ultra-tough Gorilla glass.

While the Nexus 6P is far from cheap, it's also not too expensive as it is more affordable than the HTC One A9, says Forbes. The Google Nexus 6P packs a 5.7 inch screen with 1440 x 2560 pixel density (~518 ppi pixel density). The chipset is a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810, with CPU power of Quad-core 1.55 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A57.

While it is not yet clear what might be causing the 6P's rear-end glass enclosure to crack, a possible reason would be connected to how the glass expands and shrinks when temperature changes. Given that the glass is held by a less volatile metal casing, chances are, the glass shatters when it shrinks or expands, says 9to5 Google.

The last Nexus phone to suffer such a problem was the Nexus 4. To solve the issue, the device received a group of small nubs in the corners around the phone to make sure the glass would not come in direct contact with any other surface that might cause it to heat or cool to quickly.

Smartphone releases have known to be imperfect, but once hardware issues become widespread, it could be a whole lot more difficult to fix. Not to mention more costly for the company as well. Google is yet to release a formal statement on the issue.
