Qualcomm officially unveiled its latest mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 820, at a press event in New York City. The specs and features are coming out on news sites.
According to EN Gadget, the Snapdragon 820's Adreno 530 GPU is about 40 percent faster than the Snapdragon 810's graphics, which makes it ideal for extensively heavy graphics activity, such as virtual reality.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 has specs that are fairly impressive to have in ones device. It is made up of 64-bit Kryo CPU and a 14nm quad-core chip. Furthermore, the Adreno 530 GPU can support OpenGL ES 3.1+ and OpenCL 2.0 Full.
Though much more powerful than the previous generation of chipsets, the Snapdragon 820 is also more power efficient, claiming to be twice more power efficient that the 810. The chipset is also to deliver LTE speeds that will reach up to 600 Mbps - 33 percent faster than the Snapdragon 810 - and an upload speed of up to 150Mbps, says Gizmodo.
The 820 will also support Quick Charge 3.0 and USB 3.0. The way that the Snapdragon 820 processor operates WiFi functions is also expected to change, by allowing smartphones to support both 802.11ad and 802.11ac 2x2 MU-MIMO. This is expected to make WiFi connections twice or thrice faster, according to Qualcomm's official website.
Further, in the area of connectivity, the processor supports LTE-U which allows carriers to use unlicensed WiFi spectrum to 'make their networks more robust'. This feature will prove to be useful once the devices that carry the chipset are in a crowded area. The 820 processor will also allow intelligent switching of internet between LTE and WiFi, depending on the user's internet speed.
With all the specs that are packed into Qualcomm's latest micro chip, what detail-conscious users are wondering is whether it will be enough to lure back Samsung and LG, who ditched using Qualcomm's Snapdragon set for their recent flagship handsets.
