'Alita: Battle Angel' will be directed by Robert Rodriguez of 'Sin City', 'From Dusk Till Dawn' and 'Spy Kids' fame. He has partnered with James Cameron, who will be producing the live-action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's '90s cyberpunk manga series. The upcoming film will may be delayed due to work on 'Avatar' sequels.
According to The Verge, James Cameron has teamed up with Lightstorm Entertainment partner Robert Rodriguez to bring the popular cyperpunk manga series to the big screen. Cameron will be producing while Rodriguez will be directing the long-percolating live-action adaptation. News of the film first came up back in 2000 but failed to come into fruition due to "ongoing tests and technological limitations".
The film will be based on the 1990's manga and graphic novel series created by Yukito Kishiro. According to Variety, its story will center on the titular character Alita, a female cyborg who suffers from amnesia, as she is rescued from the scrapyard by a cybermedic expert named Daisuke Ido. She is then transformed into a mercenary - a Hunter-Warrior - who goes after criminals.
Cameron expressed his enthusiasm over the future project. He said, "Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do 'Battle Angel'... This project is near and dear to me, and there's nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins." Rodriguez shared his sentiments by saying that it was an honor to work alongside Cameron.
According to Forbes.com, Cameron has long been a fan of Kishiro's work as well as other science-fiction manga including 'The Ghost In The Shell'. It was reported that although he has acquired the rights to create the film years prior, he was waiting for sufficient CGI technology to make his vision possible. It was also announced that 'Alita: Battle Angel' would have to take the backseat momentarily as Cameron is busy working on the sequels for his 'Avatar' series.
'Alita: Battle Angel' is a planned live-action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's science-fiction graphic novels. It will be directed by Robert Rodriguez of 'Sin City', 'Spy Kids' and 'From Dusk till Dawn' fame. James Cameron will be co-producing the film together with Jon Landau.
