'Jurassic World' director Colin Trevorrow and producer Steven Spielberg are reportedly working on a trilogy for the franchise. Two follow-up films have already been confirmed. The second film will see the return of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard and will not be featuring any animatronic dinosaurs.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Universal Pictures' chairman Donna Langley confirmed the planned trilogy beginning with 2015's 'Jurassic World'. She said, "There's no reason why we should [have trouble]. [Director] Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline. He's been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It's a happy surprise." The first film in the trilogy served as the fourth installment in the 'Jurassic Park' series first helmed by Steven Spielberg.
An article by MovieWeb noted that 'Jurassic World' broke box office records by raking in a cumulative $1.6 billion. A sequel was formally announced one month after the film's cinematic debut with leading stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard jumping aboard to reprise their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing. It was also announced that Trevorrow didn't want to return to helm the second film although he desired to remain involved in some way.
The filmmaker is currently attached to direct the upcoming 'Star Wars: Episode XI' slated for a 2019 release. He worked on several films in the past including 'Safety Not Guaranteed', 'Reality Show' and 'Home Base'.
According to Scified.com, the practical dinosaur animatronics that made the series famous in the first place will be eliminated from future films in the franchise. Actor Nick Robinson said, "I think that's going to be one of the last animatronics they ever make actually," as he referred to the animatronics in 'Jurassic World'. Co-star Ty Simpkins echoed Robinson's statement saying, "Yeah, that's what Colin [Trevorrow'] said, last dinosaur animatronic."
'Jurassic World' will be a trilogy as confirmed by Universal Pictures. The second film in the series is slated to be released on June 22, 2018. The preceding 2015 release was set twenty years after the events of 'Jurassic Park' and was set in the fictional island of Isla Nublar in Central America.
