Female villains and a female hero - it seems "Thor: Ragnarok" is pushing for gender equality in what is supposed to be the darkest movie in the franchise. The third movie will not be directed by Allan Taylor as Taika Waititi takes over and there is no news yet if Natalie Portman will return.
Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor so fans will once again see the God of Thunder in action and it has been reported that the Incredible Hulk played by Mark Ruffalo will be joining him in an "End of Days" plot. What makes fans more excited is the addition of Valkyrie in the cast. Valkyrie is Odin's appointed leader of the Valkyrior who are warrior goddesses tasked to choose who among those fallen in battle are worthy enough to be taken to Valhalla. There have been no reports yet as to who would wear her armor and use her spear in battle.
Movie News Guide reports that aside from Valkyrie, a female lead villain will also be joining the cast. Thor's story arc is full of strong female characters both fighting for and against Asgard. Possible lead female villains are Enchantress, warrior queen Knorda, goddess of death Hela and Karnilla the queen of the Norns.
The best bet for Thor's all-powerful female opponent is Enchantress according to Movie Pilot. The reason based on the article is that in the original storyline, Enchantress had worked with Loki on taking over the universe.
The conclusion by the article from Movie Pilot seems to be in place with how Thor's story has progressed in the MCU. Loki is currently at the seat of power as he has assumed Odin's identity. Furthermore, with Valkyrie in the story, it only fits to have Enchantress on the other side since the two have had some significant encounters in the comic books.
To tie things up with new characters and a very dark plot is Taika Waititi at the helm. According to Realty Today, the movie is currently in negotiation with the "Flight of the Concords" director. This means Allan Taylor will not be coming back to direct which might affect Natalie Portman's decision to reprise her role. Until now, there have been no announcements if she will indeed come back as Jane Foster.
More female characters in action, a very dark end of days plot and the Hulk fighting alongside Odin's heir, "Thor: Ragnarok" could might as well be the best installment in the franchise. The third installment hits the cinemas on November 3, 2017.
