'Blindspot' Updates: Show Receives Praise for Pushing Boundaries in Network Programming; Lead Star Jamie Alexander’s Health Compromised By Tattoos?

By

NBC's "Blindspot" continues to be a critical darling with acclaims primarily focusing on its fresh approach to network TV shows but it looks like the show's success has taken a toll on the health of Jaimie Alexander, the show's protagonist.

It seems like "Blindspot" is not only popular with television aficionados as the show has again received compliments and this time it is more focused on how it continues to challenge the standards of television shows broadcasted on major networks.

Writing for The Globe and Mail, columnist John Doyle notes how the show is capable to incorporate elements like nudity and sexuality which is considered to be a taboo for public network shows. Doyle particularly points out that the use of tattoos imprinted on the lead star's body is a clever strategy that the showrunners have used to present a more daring image, but still confined within network-friendly broadcasting parameters.

"In some ways, the premise of "Blindspot" is an inspired maneuver to overcome the limitations of network TV. Viewers see plenty of nudity and sex on cable. They see little of it on networks, which puts the genre at a disadvantage. Covering a naked woman in tattoos and using that as a device for gazing continually at her body is, some might say, cleverness itself," Doyle said.

Although the tattoos may have been fundamental in the show's success, it has been quite a burden for actress Jaimie Alexander whose health has reportedly deteriorated due to the harmful side effects of the inked illustrations on her body, The Daily Mail reports.

The show's producers have particularly resorted to using body doubles in order to minimize Alexander's exposure to the tattoos. This is due to the fact that the actress has been recently diagnosed with a pulmonary infection which she personally believes is caused by the inks used in the tattoos.

"[Alexander has] become convinced the ink is toxic and making her sick," according to a report from Page Six.

Hopefully this leads to Alexander's condition improving as the show continues to be successful, especially that a second season is already in place.

Catch "Blindspot" every Mondays 10/9c on NBC.
