'Marvel’s Jessica Jones' Update: Show receives acclaim for dark undertones; Lead star Krysten Ritter shares why she wanted the role

Netflix's newest series "Marvel's Jessica Jones" has been receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from critics due to its unorthodox approach to storytelling as its protagonist Krysten Ritter reveals what she loves the most about being the Jessica Jones.

Although "Marvel's Jessica Jones" is still set to premiere in full within this week, the said series has been repeatedly lauded in several publications. This is primarily due to the show's dark and somehow realistic depiction of the lead character, superhero-turned-police investigator Jessica Jones. Writing for Deadline, columnist Dominic Patten has noted that the commendable thing about the show is how it tries to delve in topics which can be considered taboo for some other shows, especially those that focus on superheroes.

"Bringing depth to the series and its characters, under Rosenberg's steady showrunning hand there are also powerful topics of PTSD, abuse, assault, shame, and death dealt with in a mature and intriguing manner - this is a new height for Marvel, which already leaped pretty high with Daredevil, the first of four series to eventually be shown on Netflix," Patten writes.

With themes as dark and complex as such, one more thing that struck with the critics in terms of the show is how they focused on the intrapersonal aspect of the titular character. In "Marvel's Jessica Jones", the lead is depicted as someone who is coping with her own demons rather than exploring her supernatural potentials.

"Unlike most other superheroes, Jessica is not standing outside mortal experience looking in; she is drowning in it, and fighting her way out," reporter Mary McNamara writes for the LA Times.

Even lead star Krysten Ritter has expressed her elation for getting the lead role in the show saying that she wanted to do a show that is out-of-the-box.

"I needed something complex, plus I like doing dark characters and comedy - and Jessica Jones has all of that," Ritter tells Rolling Stone.

Ritter also added that if she'd portray a superhero, she wanted to be one that does not rely on sexuality but rather focus on the tough and introspective side of the character.

"It's a psychological thriller first, and a superhero show second. It's exactly the kind of female-led show I'd watch. And I kick a lot of ass without having to wear a leotard," Ritter quips.

A complex story and a very multifaceted character leading the pack, Marvel Universe fans will truly be in for a treat with this show. Catch the full season of "Marvel's Jessica Jones" which will be available for full streaming on Netflix starting November 20.
