Season three of ABC's "Agents of SHIELD" starts off on a good note with favorable reviews coming in, along with the introduction of a new character that may vastly change the game for the show's narrative.
Positive critical reception has been clouding the show since its return for a new season which premiered earlier this month. Much of the praise comes from the improvement on the show's storytelling which has been previously criticized for its "dragging" nature.
Reviewing for The Digital Spy, columnist Ed Power pointed out that the early seasons of the show prefer to bring out its most powerful cards at the most untimely moments which leads to the narrative being "anti-climactic".
"In season one especially, SHIELD viewers waited an age for something - anything - to happen. Yet when the plot finally achieved take-off, there was a lingering sense of anti-climax," Power noted.
But with season three, the show has finally found a pace that it can comfortably rest on as the story easily and seamlessly progress episode after episode - starting with the pilot where we see The Cavalry finally reunite. Gripping action-packed scenes take over the rest of the episodes for this current season which puts specific focus on Hunter's (Nick Blood) brooding revenge against the Hydra, Variety reports.
To top off the exciting season, a new character by the name of Gideon Malick will be introduced in the upcoming episodes. It has also been announced that "Deadwood" actor Powers Boothe will be taking in the said role, according to Deadline.
Malick's is introduced as a powerful tycoon that bears the same mission as the protagonists do - to track down every corner of the world for Inhumans. However, his presence does not immediately equate to a forged alliance with the SHIELD. His shady character and resolve will be explored further in the upcoming episodes.
The third season of "Agents of SHIELD" is currently being aired Tuesdays 9 P.M at ABC with parallel broadcasting via Channel 4 in the UK.
