Two fighter pilots are set to return to prove their power in as Kilmer revealed via Facebook that an offer was in place, and he is returning for the sequel. As reported by Coming Soon, Kilmer is set to reprise his role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky.
"I just got offered Top Gun 2", Kilmer wrote. "Not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script... We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I've ever met in the film biz, but let's fire up some fighter jets again!!!", he added.
Official plot details are currently under wraps for Top Gun 2, although, according to a report by Collider, Skydance's CEO David Ellison said he thinks the film should be released in 3D and added that it will explore more on a the modern day drone warfare technology where Pilots are no longer as needed, in which case, Cruise's Maverick will try to prove them wrong.
Cruise is still not officially signed on the project, despite Ellison's statement about not having Top Gun 2 without him. As reported by /Film, Cruise previously said that he wants to film practically if he returns for the sequel.
"If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it'd be fun to do, I'd like to fly those jets again, but we got to do all the jets practical, no CGI on the jets... I'm saying right now no CGI on the jets. If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun.", Cruise said.
Cruise and director Tony Scott have previously worked on a possible Top Gun 2 until Scott's demise in 2012. No director has been placed for the project written by Peter Craig, Justin Marks, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz.
