Last Thursday’s episode of Heroes Reborn marked the midseason finale of the event mini series. With only three episodes away from the finale, can fans of the show still hope for another run next year? In the past weeks, there had been no chatter about the possible renewal nor cancellation of Heroes Reborn, but looking into the facts, it seems that Tim Kring’s latest TV offering is headed into a dark future.
Heroes Reborn was one of the anticipated series to debut this fall. Unfortunately, the series premiere has been slammed by critics due to its highly-convoluted storyline and overall underwhelming plots viewers have already seen in the past. Still, Reborn kicked off strong on its Thursday 8PM block on NBC. According to Seriable, it targeted a total of 6.9 million viewers with a 2.0 rating on its special two-hour premiere.
After airing nine episodes, Heroes Reborn is still struggling to deliver a top-notch one-hour of television. Variety reported that the midseason finale “didn’t provide much closure”, leaving viewers several loose ends that still needs to be resolved until it returns in January for the final three episodes.
The ratings reflect how disappointingly Reborn has performed throughout its nine weeks on air. Its most recent outing titled “11:53 To Odessa” slipped from almost a half of its total viewers in the pilot with only 3.78 million set of eyeballs and a 1.1 in rating. Clearly, this is not a positive development for the NBC reboot.
Last August, creator and executive producer Tim Kring has discussed the possibility of a second run for Heroes Reborn. He told TV Line that he has “always felt the brand was elastic enough and with a broad enough premise” that he feels confident that his team could find brand new stories to tell with new and recurring characters.
The decline in ratings of Heroes Reborn and its negative reviews from the critics are two indications that the event mini series might get cancelled anytime soon. TV By The Numbers has reported that its latest standing from NBC’s lineup is “a toss up between renewal and cancellation”.
NBC has yet to announce if Heroes Reborn will no longer return next year. After hitting its midseason finale last week, Heroes Reborn remains a weak performer on NBC’s primetime programming this year. Does this mean that the Tim Kring-produced series will get the axe soon?
