Ethan Hunt is set to be back for another mission with Mission Impossible 6. Director Christopher McQuarrie is in final negotiations to write and possibly direct the sequel which will be a first in the history of the franchise.
The IMF is not slowing down anytime soon as McQuarrie is currently in final talks to write the upcoming sequel. According to /FIlm, Paramount and Skydance wants McQuarrie back on board, and although talks are currently unclear, it is also possible for the Jack Reacher director to return to helm the sixth film as well.
If McQuarrie gets on board to direct, his return will be the first time the franchise hires the same director for more than one instalment. Rogue Nation's predecessors were helmed by Brian de Palma, John Woo, JJ Abrams, and Brad Bird respectively.
Claims suggest that production for Mission Impossible 6 will commence next August, also as suggested by Tom Cruise's statement about filming next summer. According to Cinemablend, Cruise is currently busy with filming for Jack Reacher 2 under Ed Zwick's direction and written by Jason Fuchs; after which he is set to star in Doug Liman's Luna Park, before he finally moves forward with Mission Impossibe 6.
Cruise announced his plans for Mission Impossible 6 in late July. As reported by Variety, Paramount pictures vice chairman Rob Moore also expressed the studio's support on Cruise's announcement. "We're very happy to be developing this movie with Tom", Moore said. "There's no question that Ethan Hunt deserves another film.", he added.
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation earned $682 million worldwide from its $195 million earnings domestically and the $487 million from foreign outlets. It is the second highest grossing movie in the franchise after 2011's Ghost Protocol, according to Box Office Mojo.
Aside from Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Alec Baldwin are also likely to return to reprise their respective roles. No exact release date has been slated for Mission Impossible 6 but it is expected to hit theaters some time in 2017.
