Independence Day: Resurgence is currently in post-production, and is set for its mid 2016 release date. While the cast has been revealed to be a mix of new and returning characters from the first film, casting calls released during filming suggest international diversity.
Although the action is expected to largely feature United States' defense measures against the return of the alien invaders, the sequel could be more diverse in featuring other race's tactics as well as suggested by the casting calls released during filming.
As reported by Scified, aside from casting calls for fighter pilots, and soldiers, the makers of the film also searched for "East Indian men, women, and children", "Asian men, women, and children", and "Africans and African American men, women, and children", which could entail a more diverse setting for the sequel.
During separate casting calls, the production also sought for "elderly men and women ages", children, and Area 51 soldiers, doctors, and nurses. The sequel's diverse talent pool could be influenced by the plot that features the nations of the world united after the first attack to create a more sophisticated technology in preparation for the enemies' next invasion attempt.
Independence Day: Resurgence's cast will be a mix of old and new cast members ready for some action with their characters. As reported by Digital Spy, Jeff Goldblum, Jeff Hirsch, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner are some of the returning cast members who will play alongside new members such as Liam Hemsworth, Jessie T. Usher, Maika Monroe, Joey King, and Sela Ward among many others.
After the events of the first film, a couple of changes are to be expected from the characters. According to People, Vivica Fox revealed the significant difference of her character, Jasmine, from the first film and the sequel. "She has matured and she's no longer dragging her ass on the pole. She's working saving lives in the hospital", she said.
The story will be set 20 years after the first alien attack where Earth's nations have united to develop a sophisticated defense program from the scrap technology left by the previous foreign invaders. However, a new set of aliens are set to surge after receiving a distress signal before they were wiped out by Goldblum's David Levinson and Will Smith's Steve Hiller.
Independence Day: Resurgence is directed by Roland Emmerich and screenplay written by Carter Blanchard. It is set to hit theaters in June 24, 2016.
