'Star Trek Beyond' is an upcoming addition to the Star Trek reboot series started by J.J. Abrams. The new film, directed by Justin Lin, is set for a worldwide IMAX release for 2016. Abrams revealed the flaws of his past film 'Star Trek Into Darkness'.
According to Trek News, Justin Lin's sequel to 2013's 'Star Trek Into Darkness' will be released on IMAX on July 22, 2016, the exact same day it premieres in regular theaters worldwide. Lin said, "IMAX provides a one-of-a-kind movie going experience to audiences all over the world. I am excited to bring the newest journey into the Star Trek universe to its screens." Greg Foster of IMAX Corp. and IMAX Entertainment said that they have partnered with Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot for the third time to bring the Star Trek franchise on IMAX screens.
The first two films in the reboot series, 'Star Trek' and 'Star Trek Into Darkness' released in 2009 and 2013 respectively, were also shown in IMAX theaters. According to Deadline, 'Star Trek' raked in $385 million in the box office while its follow-up earned $467 million. They were both directed by J.J. Abrams, who has since stepped down only to return as producer for 'Star Trek Beyond'.
J.J. Abrams couldn't make it for the third in the reboot series since he had commitments to helm the latest 'Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens'. Lin stepped in as replacement after Abrams' exit.
The Taiwanese-American film director is best known for his work on the third to sixth installment in the 'Fast and the Furious' franchise. He also worked on the popular television series' 'Community' and 'True Detective'.
According to Cinema Blend, 'Star Trek Into Darkness' was considered one of the worst films ever made in the history of the iconic science-fiction franchise. During an appearance at the Montclair Film Festival, Abrams admitted to late night talk show host Stephen Colbert the one big flaw his film reboot had. He said, "[T]here were too many nods to '[Star Trek II]: The Wrath of Khan.' I'll cop to that."
He also revealed on previous interviews that there "fundamental story problems" even before they began principal photography. The 2013 film, however, received fairly positive reviews from critics and did fairly well in the box office.
