'The Maze Runner: The Death Cure' will be directed by Wes Ball, who also helmed the first two films in the science-fiction series. Principal photography may begin in December of this year. Author James Dashner talked about his involvement in the moviemaking process and how it was the highlight of his career.

According to /Film, Wes Ball has signed on to direct the third and final film in the 'Maze Runner' cinematic trilogy. He said, "Ultimately our goal is to create an awesome three-movie trilogy... Not many people have done that and now I have the opportunity to do that. I am directing the third film and we've already been busy preparing and working on the final conclusion of this saga." Ball will begin principal photography on December, in time for the scheduled release on February 2017.

However, in a previous interview with Collider, Ball announced that he would start shooting on February 2016. It is unclear which of these dates the filmmaker is set to follow. He said that they have begun working on the sequel and that it will be a different movie from the first two in terms of color palette and terrain.

Ball hinted that filming may happen in Vancouver. He teased, "It's gonna be a very different movie. We're not gonna be in the same kind of setting anymore. We're gonna go a little bit more future, do something a little gritty, a little film noir almost. It's gonna be cool." Unlike the ongoing Hollywood trend of splitting the final movie in the trilogy into two parts, 'The Maze Runner: The Death Cure' will be one full film and serve as a conclusion to the series.

The cinematic series is based on the bestselling young adult novels of James Dashner. The upcoming film will be based on his third and final book of the same name, first published on October 2011. During an interview with Moviepilot, the author admitted that his involvement in the moviemaking process of bringing his characters and their stories to life on the big-screen had been the "highlight" of his career. He said that he allowed some changes done for the live-action adaptation, especially with the second film 'The Scorch Trials', but the third will remain faithful to his novel.

'The Maze Runner: The Death Cure' is an upcoming science-fiction film based on Dashner's third novel of the same name. It is scheduled to premiere in theaters on February 17, 2017. It was preceded by 2014's 'The Maze Runner' and 2015's 'The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials'.
