LG Ray Phablet Announced; To Be Available In Limited Markets For Now

By

Korean electronics manufacturer LG has just unveiled its new smartphone, the phablet-sized LG Ray.

LG announced the new phone via a press statement, adding that the new phone will be made available initially in Russia and the rest of the former Soviet Union and Latin America before the end of the year. The LG Ray will be the company's budget smartphone aimed primarily at 3G markets

The phone will sport a 5.5-inch HD display with a 720p resolution, a 13 MP main camera and an 8 MP front camera for its optics, weighing 158 grams, and is backed by a removable 3000mAh battery.

Internally, the phone has a 1.4 Core A7 octa-core processor and a Mali-450MP4 graphics processor. In terms of storage, the LG Ray will have a 16 GB internal memory which can be expanded through a microSD card, though NDTV notes that LG has not provided information yet as to how microSD storage the phone can handle.

Being a 3G market-aimed phone, another feature the LG Ray will not have would be support for 4G LTE networks which explains why the phone will be initially released in the aforementioned regions for the meantime at least.

LG Ray's lack of LTE support has been one point of contention among tech observers and analysts. One website, Pocket-lint, calls it "a shame" considering the phone has not been shy on its specifications. Others were disappointed that the phone's resolution is not full HD unlike other smartphones available in the market today.

However, the president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Juno Cho, assures that every LG customer will receive "a unique user experience with a balance of design, performance and value" with the LG Ray.

No information has been given yet about the unit's pricing and its possible availability in other regions. But the details will be announced by region by the time of the launch.
