'The Expendables 4' is a planned addition to the action-adventure franchise that follows a group of elite mercenaries. The fourth film is confirmed to begin production by 2016 in time for a scheduled release some time in 2017. It reportedly has a budget of more than $100 million.
According to Coming Soon, an additional installment for the action-adventure series has been confirmed and is expected to begin filming in 2016 - mostly in China. Sylvester Stallone is reportedly heavily involved in the new film as he is set to return as lead protagonist Barney Ross. The actor, screenwriter and filmmaker directed the first ever film in the series and has written for subsequent follow-ups such as 'The Expendables 2' and 'The Expendables 3'.
It remains unknown whether past cast members will be returning to reprise their roles. According to Den of Geek, 'The Expendables 4' is scheduled to be released some time in 2017 despite not having a director yet. The second film had Simon West of 'Con Air' fame while the third had Patrick Hughes of 2010's 'Red Hill'.
Another article by Empire stated that the fourth film in the franchise was made possible by financing from China. 'The Expendables 3' earned $206 million worldwide with the China market making up half of its total revenue. Executive Steven Paul commented, "What seems to work in their favour in China, is that these movies are good old-fashioned shoot 'em up entertainment."
It was previously announced that the upcoming film will have a massive budget of around $100 million or more. Perhaps a huge bulk would finance the famous all-star action ensemble that includes Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Wesley Snipes, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dolph Lundgren among others.
