Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Church founder, dies at 84

Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps died at age 84, according to a report from The Huffington Post citing his children as sources.

Timothy Phelps confirmed the death of his father before midnight last Wednesday. Timothy told WIBW about the loss. Meanwhile, Shirley Phelps-Roper also confirmed the news with the Topeka Capital-Journal.

However, one of Phelps son, Jonathan, disputed the earlier confirmation of his siblings saying, “Pastor Phelps is doing just fine." WIBW took the statement of the other Phelps’ sibling could be on a spiritual reference.

The Westboro Baptist Church was established in 1955 by the Phelps family and became infamous for their anti-gay teachings.

A representative from the WBC Steve Drain told Lawrence Journal-World last Sunday, "I can tell you that Fred Phelps is having some health problems. He's an old man, and old people get health problems." Westboro Baptist Church representatives were not immediately available to give further details on the news of Pastor Phelps’ death on Thursday.
